Red Deer River Forestry Trunk to Deer Creek
River:
Red Deer
Section:
Forestry Trunk Bridge to Deer Creek Recreation Area
How to Get There:
From Sundre Travel West along highway 584 and turn south (left) on to Coal Camp Road and follow this road down which eventually turns into Forestry Trunk road (734). Continue down to deer creek recreation area. This is a private campsite but about 500 meters down the road is a Electrical Power Line running across the highway. Turn down towards the river on this steep “path”. This can be your campsite for the day and your take out. For your put in continue down the 734 until you meet a fork in the road. Turn left here and follow this a couple km until you reach the blue bridge. This is your put in.
What to expect:
A fun class II/III river perfect for intermediate/novice kayakers looking to challenge their skills on a higher volume river. In times of high water this river should be left to intermediate kayakers with a fairly bomb proof roll. Expect about 2 hours to run this section which contains the following grade 3 features: GooseBerry Ledge ( a grade 3 drop) and Jimbo’s Staircase ( a series of ledges rated to grade 3). After gooseberry ledge the river starts to become harder with mostly class 3 features. This section of the Red Deer will provide a stable enjoyment for many kayakers at all levels.
