Kananaskis
River:
Kananaskis
Section: Widow Maker to Canoe Meadows
What to Expect:
This year round river is a result of an agreement with TransAlta of some sort, I dont know the exact details but the river is damned controlled at Barrier Lake and essentially this river can be run year round, even during the winter months (bring gloves). Being damned controlled the flow is consistent from when they open to when its closed. The rivers main features are widow maker which is a grade II+ rapid, green tongue a surf wave and santa claus the larger surf wave. There is a slalom course set up as well. Expect the river to be busy while the damn is opened as its no more than an hours drive from Calgary towards Canmore. The grade of the river is class II. Expect less than an hour to run this section. You can spend all day playing around though.
How to get there:
From Calgary head down HIghway 1 towards Kananaskis (west) and turn off on Highway 40 towards Kananskis river and you can stop at canoe meadows and this is your take out and you can continue further up to Widow maker and this is your start.
